At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
